A method and apparatus for providing a talk path (7) in a longitudinal cavity (13) of an enhanced crush, impact, and cut-through resistant communications cable (6). The talk path is especially suited for a fiber optic communications cable (6). The cable jacket (12) is formed of a deformable material having a plurality of longitudinal cavities (13) spaced about the cable core (10). A longitudinal cavity (13) may contain a copper pair (7) or an optical fiber to serve as a talk path during servicing of the cable (6). The talk path (7) may be readily accessed (18) by a service technician without exposing the inner core (10) of the communications cable (6) .
