The bag has a rectilinear mouth in the folded state, and a reinforcing selvage parallel to the mouth and consisting of a strip with a transverse profile several times the wall thickness. The selvage pref. consists of a plastic strip bonded to the bag wall so that the latter is adapted to its profile. A convenient profile is a W-section, which may be imparted to a plastic strip by applying grooved rolls. The selvage gives a more rigid top to the bag and distributes the stresses more evenly when it is loaded.
