11DT-04786 CORE AND COIL ASSEMBLY FOR A TRANSFORMER HAVING AN AMORPHOUS STEEL CORE AND METHOD OF MAKING SAID ASSEMBLY There is described a method for making a core and coil assembly for an amorphous steel core transformer. A coil subassembly having a window of generally, but not exactly, rectangular cross-section is provided. The coil windows is bounded by two spaced-apart generally parallel end faces and two spaced-apart slight concave side faces. A core is provided having a leg that comprises many superposed substantially-aligned strips of amorphous steel, each strip having two edges spaced apart by the width of the strip and a central region disposed centrally of the two edges. The width of the strip approximates the distance between the coil-window end faces. The strips are characterized by a slightly greater thickness in their central region than in the regions of the edges. Before mating the core with the coil subassembly, the core is annealed. During annealing, the core leg is squeezed to reduce the thickness of the leg in these edge regions and thereby render the cross-sectional shape of the core leg more conformant with the cross-sectional shape of the coil window. Subsequently, the core leg is inserted into the coil window with the thickness of the core leg extending between the slightly-concave side faces of the coil window. |
