Disclosed is a detergent composition containing one or more anionic surfactants and one or more soil release agents characterized by the presence of an anionic surfactant-interactive nonionic hydrophile and/or an anionic surfactant-interactive hydrophobic moiety, or both, and a soil release agent-enhancing amount of a polyhydroxy fatty acid amide surfactant of the formula: <IMAGE> wherein R1 is H, C1-C4 hydrocarbyl, 2-hydroxy ethyl, 2-hydroxy propyl, or a mixture thereof, R2 is C5-C31 hydrocarbyl, and Z is a polyhydroxylhydrocarbyl having a linear hydrocarbyl chain with at least 3 hydroxyls directly connected to the chain, or an alkoxylated derivative thereof. |
