1,270,852. Branched polyester based fibres. SOC. RHODIACETA. 3 June, 1969 [4 June, 1968], No. 28125/69. Heading B5B. [Also in Divisions C3 and D1] A branched polyester-based fibre substantially free from functional groups, other than ester groups, and terminal carboxyl groups, hydroxyl groups or ester forming derivatives of such groups is derived from terephthalic acid or a terephthalic acid derivative, ethylene glycol, tri- and tetra-functional ester-forming branching compounds and up to 10 mol. per cent of another glycol and/or another dicarboxylic acid (based on the total content of esterified carboxylic acid groups in the polyester), the proportion of said branching compound corresponding to the presence in the polyester of from 0.2/(n-2) to 2.0/(n-2) per cent of n-valent ester chain links, n being the functionality of the branching compound, based on the total number of ester chain links in the polyester, the fibre having an elongation at break of greater than 15%, a tensile strength of 18 to 36 g./tex, a specific viscosity of 0À47 to 0.72 (1% polyester solution in o-chlorophenol at 25‹ C.) and a melt viscosity of 600 to 2500 poises at 285‹ C. The branching agent may be 1,1,1-trimethylolpropane, trimethyltrimesate, pentaerythritol, glycerol, methyl hydroxyisophthalate or trimethylolethane. A list of optional additional glycols and diacids is given in claim 3. The fibre may be produced by melt extrusion followed by orientation by stretching and thereafter the fibre may be mix-spun with wool or cotton and woven or knitted into a fabric to produce a fabric with good pilling resistance, pleat retention and fibrillation resistance.
