Potassium salts of nitrated phenols, especially picric acid, are produced in modified crystal forms, having low mechanical sensitivity, but suitable for use in electrically fired initiatory devices such as fuse-heads and bridge-wire igniters, by precipitation in the presence of hydrophilic colloids such as dextrin or cellulose ethers. The products are free-flowing, non-acicular crystals, normally having a mean particle size less than 100 .mu.m.
