Dicyclopentenyl-phenols are prepared by reacting at below 150 DEG C. and in presence of Me2SO4, Et2SO4, AlCl3, Al, H3PO4, H2SO4, HCiO4 or polyphosphoric acids, dicyclopentadiene and a phenol having at least one free 2,4 or 6 position, and interrupting the reaction before products crystallizing at ambient temperature are obtained. The products, which may contain a preponderance of the phenolic ether, are optionally heated at e.g. 200-350 DEG C. to transpose the dicyclopentenyl group to the nucleus. Exemplified phenols are a m-/p-cresol or a xylenol mixture. |
