PURPOSE:To improve cycle property by using intermetallic compound of metal electrochemically acting with alkaline metal or alkaline earth metal and metal not acting therewith as base material for a negative electrode to store alkaline metal or alkaline earth metal in this base material. CONSTITUTION:Intermetallic compound of metal electrochemically acting with alkaline metal or alkaline earth metal and metal not electrochemically acting with alkaline metal or alkaline earth metal is used as base material for a negative electrode to store alkaline metal or alkaline earth metal in this base material. If lithium is electrochemically stored, the metal not electrochemically acting with alkaline metal or alkaline earth metal acts to maintain a crystal structure prior to store lithium so that alloy can be restrained from being powdered. As easy-to-melt alloy is used as base material for lithium alloy, no lower battery voltage occurs. It is thus possible to improve the property such as cycle property of a nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery.
