Disclosed herein are orthorhombic platinum-metal oxides of the type Pt3MO6, wherein: M = Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Mg, or Cd; and process for making these oxides which are catalysts for the hydrogenation of ethylene.
