Cigarettes 14 are fed by a drum 12 into elongate troughs 16 of a rotating testing drum 10 where they are retained by suction in known manner, the troughs 16 are then closed by a belt 38 that extends over an arcuate path in contact with a portion of the circumferential surface of the drum 10, and a fluid (e.g. air) at other than atmospheric pressure is applied to the thus closed troughs for testing the cigarettes contained therein. In the embodiment described, a pair of axially aligned and abutted filter cigarettes 14 is fed into each trough 16, and a pneumatically actuated, axially bored, piston (48) axially aligned with and passing through an end wall in each trough 16 communicates through its bore (52) with the free end of one of the pair of cigarettes 14 and causes the free end of the other cigarette 14 of the pair to contact and be sealed by the opposite end wall of the trough. The bores (52) in the pistons (48), and also ducts 30 that communicate with the interior of the chambers formed around the cigarettes 14 by the closed troughs 16, are connected in known manner by stationary arcuate slots to a testing air pressure or suction supply and to a pressure difference detecting device of any suitable known pneumatic sensing cigarette testing device.
