Heading C2C. 2,3,6-Trimethylphenol is separated from a mixture of phenols, including 2,4,6-trimethylphenol and other closely boiling di- and trimethylphenols by obtaining a concentrate fraction of the phenols containing at least 40% by weight 2,3,6-trimethylphenol, subjecting a solution of the fraction in a hydrocarbon solvent which boils between 60‹ and 150‹ C. to countercurrent extraction with aqueous alkali metal hydroxide of between 2 and 10% by weight concentration in an extraction zone, the mole ratio of alkali metal hydroxide to extractables being between 0À9 and 2À0 and the specific gravity of the solution being lower than the specific gravity of the aqueous alkali hydroxide solution, separating the heavier extract from the lighter raffinate, recovering the raffinate consisting of 2,3,6- and 2,4,6-trimethylphenol in the solvent and fractionally distilling the raffinate to recover 2,3,6-trimethylphenol.
