PURPOSE:To obtain the subject compound useful as a surfactant or a synthetic intermediate therefor with good hue and odor by reacting a saccharide with a monohydric alcohol in the presence of an acid catalyst and a specific amount of an adsorbent. CONSTITUTION:A saccharide (preferably a <=6C reducing sugar) is reacted with a monohydric alcohol (preferably 1-22C alcohol or an alkylene oxide adduct thereof), in the presence of an acid catalyst (preferably p-toluenesulfonic acid, sulfuric acid, phosphoric acid or strong acidic ion exchange resin) and 0.1-10wt.% (based on the total weight of the saccharide and the monohydric alcohol) adsorbent (preferably active carbon, activated clay, diatomaceous earth, activated alumina, zeolite or talcite) to afford the objective compound. |
