The mechanism adjusts a guide fitting (11) for a safety belt (12), and particularly the top one of a three-point automatic belt. It has a porfiled holding member (16) on which the fitting is slid by remote control and locked in different positoins. A control member (28) sliding on the holding one has a gearwheel (24) meshing with the holding member. The fitting is coupled to a locking member (31) for the gearwheel, and which operates when the belt is placed under load.
