The appts. includes a tundish with one or two elongate slots through which molten pig iron is discharged as a thin film or films. The slot size can be varied to control the quantity of discharged metal. Refining additives are discharged from one or two conduits into the molten stream and oxidizing fluid is discharged from a second conduit or pair of conduits into the stream or streams.
