The unit measures the resistance to the flow of gas through tobacco formed into the shape of a cigarette. A hard-metal finger forms a continuously moving line of tobacco into the required shape. This finger has a hole (18) at one end to receive a tube (20) which is connected to a pressurised source of gas (17) with a flow measuring nozzle (19). A pressure gauge (P) measures the pressure downstream of the nozzle and enables the volumetric flow of gas to be held constant.
