Isolation of isothiazolinone derivs. of formula (I): (where (a) R = 1-3C alkyl and X = H or halogen, o (b) R = 1-16C alkyl or 5-6C cycloalkyl and X = H) from technical mixts. contg. (I) together with one or more impurities selected from cpds. of formula (I) where R = 3-16C alkyl or 5-6C cycloalkyl and X = halogen, 4-halo-2-alkyl-3-isothiazolinones, 4,5-dihalo-2-alkyl-3- isothiazolinones, their halogen adducts, nitrose cpds. and opt. water-soluble amines and amides, is effected by (a) when water-soluble impurities are absent, dissolving the mixt. in a water-immiscible organic solvent, drying the soln., treating with a strong acid, separating the pptd. salt of (I), and opt. hydrolysing the salt; or (b) when water-soluble impurities are present, treating the mixt. with a 2-phase system comprising a water-immiscible organic solvent and H2O or dil. aq. acid, separating the phases, and treating the organic phase as in (a).
