Light sources arranged equidistantly in anillumination row are used to produce a latent electrostatic image on a transfer drum. The character generator has several modules (11), each contg. a number of light sources. The modules are detachably mounted on a module carrier with which they are in thermal contact. The contacting surfaces of the modules and module carrier are designed to produce very good thermal conductivity. The plates of the modules consist of the same material as the carrier. The modules have joint surfaces (116) enabling them to sit adjacent to each other without gaps, thus maintaining equidistance of the light sources in the illumination row.
