The protective hatch is for the vertical exit from an air-raid shelter, particularly underground. It comprises a metal cowl (12) inserted in an aperture (14) in the shelter roof (16). A domed top (22) has an integral tubular spigot (24) of slightly smaller diameter than the aperture, also a radial edge (34) protruding beyond the spigot and resting via a joint (36) on the top aperture edge. The actuating rod (40) of a lifting mechanism turns freely and is fixed to the cowl close to the spigot, its length being greater than that of the latter. Thus when extended the hatch can slew freely above the shelter roof.
