A thin layer of a fusible plastic compatible with crosslinked polyethylene is interposed between the two pieces of crosslinked polyethylene to be welded together, the assembly being heated under light pressure. As a bonding material low, medium or high density polyethylene, and polyethylene which is partially cross-linked to an extent is not >50% may be used. Alternatively polypropylene, polyisobutylene or natural rubber may be employed. Heating may be by electrically heated plates or by gas burners or lamps. The assembly is heated to 120 degrees - 200 degrees C. |
