PURPOSE:To enhance the production efficiency of methanol by a method wherein a photocatalyst is prepared by covering the metal oxide constituting the photocatalyst or either of photocatalyst metal and carrier metal with a third metal or its metal oxide. CONSTITUTION:In order to cause a selective production of methanol to take place by suppressing hydrogen evolution and reducing CO2, a catalyst or carrier is covered with a third metal or its metal oxide. When SiC is used as a photocatalyst 1, after platinum (Pt) 2 is supported on the SiC, mercury (Hg) is added thereto and stirred. After stirring for about one hour and a half, the mercury is separated from the photocatalyst particles and air-dried. The completely fixed mercury is used as the photocatalyst to photo-reduce the CO2. Water is used as a reaction solvent (reducing agent). On the platinum-mercury covered side, the CO2 reduction proceeds according to CO2+6e<->+6H<+> CH3OH+ H2O and, on the SiC side, according to 2H2 O2+4H<+>+4e<->. |
