In order to prevent the freezing of liquid in a pipe, at least one gland assembly (11,12) is installed in the pipe. A pair of resistance wires (19), formed into a continuous wire, are passed through the gland assembly (11) and extend along the pipe therewithin. If a second gland assembly (12) is provided, the loop end of the wire may pass out of the pipe and be wound around a tap 20. A power supply unit (Figure 4) is arranged to supply about 10 W/m current to the wire (19).
