摘要 <p>PURPOSE:To obtain the subject compound in high selectivity by subjecting naphthalene or 2-methylnaphthalene to methylation by using aluminum chloride (or bromide) as a catalyst and polymethylbenzene as a methylation agent in the presence of an aromatic nitro compound. CONSTITUTION:Naphthalene or 2-methylnaphthalene is subjected to methylation with using aluminum chloride or aluminum bromide as a catalyst and polymethylbenzene, especially hexamethylbenzene as a methylation agent in the presence of an aromatic nitro compound, preferably nitrobenzene or nitronaphthalene containable of alkyl group, especially nitrobenzene, 2.6- dimethylnitrobenzene or nitromesitylene to afford 2,6-dimethylnaphthalene as a precursor of 2,6-naphthalene dicarboxylic acid useful as, e.g. a raw material of polyester from a reaction mixture in high selectivity as possible as separating by crystallization.</p>
