DIFFERENTIAL WITH REMOVABLE RACE INSERT OF END BEARING SUPPORT FOR A DRIVING PINION

A reduced bearing life has been noted of the pinion support bearing particularly in the differentials of trucks which is caused by: 1) movements of the bearing innerring; 2) breakage of bearing flange; 3) bearing race-way distortion due to undercut support. These undercuts are formed during the gear cutting process. The solution of avoiding these defects has been found in the application of a cylindrical roller bearing (26) which innerring (16 min ) is cup-shaped. The end-cup (16 sec ) of this innerring (16 min ) is used to (positive) locate the innerring, i.e. to prevent movement of this ring (16 min ) and/or flange breakage. The end-cap (16 sec ) further provides stiffness to minimise race-way distortion due to improper mounting or loads in case the innerring support (13) is undercut by the gear-cutting process.
