PURPOSE:To eliminate the interruption of printing for cleaning the heater formed surface of a thermal head by driving only one thermal head present at a printing position corresponding to the reversal of a pair of thermal heads and bringing a cleaning member into slide contact with the heater formed surface of the other thermal head under pressure. CONSTITUTION:Thermal heads 11, 12 are supported by a support member 14 and can be reversed centering around a symmetric point 0-0 in the direction shown by an arrow by detaching a ribbon cassette. The heads 11, 12 are set at the printing position opposed to a platen 2 and a lower non-printing position. A drive signal is changed over only to one head 1 set at the printing position. A cleaning member 13 is provided at a predetermined position to extend along the platen 2 and, when a support member 14 is moved in the direction shown by an arrow A and printing is carried out by the head 11, the heater formed surface 12a of the head 12 is brought into contact with the cleaning member 13 under pressure to slide left and right. The member 13 is constituted by bonding a fibrous thin plate such as a felt to a plate-shaped member by an adhesive and has sufficient cleaning capacity. |
