PURPOSE:To enhance contrast and C/N by irradiating an information storing medium provided with a reflection layer and a recording layer containing a high polymer liquid crystal compound which is uniaxially oriented and in which retardation is controlled with circularly polarized light. CONSTITUTION:This storing medium is obtained by providing the reflection layer 2 on a lower substrate 1 and an oriented control film 4 on an upper sub strate 5 and interposing the recording layer 3 containing the high polymer liquid crystal compound between both substrates. The compound is processed to be uniaxially oriented in a concentric state or a radial state by the film 4. The film thickness d(mum) of the layer 3 is formed so that the retardation (DELTAnd) may be lambda(m+ or -1/4)(m:integer of 0-3, in the case of m=0, only +1/4 holds, and lambda expresses the wavelength(mum) of reproducing light) Provided that DELTAn=n11-nrt. angle and (n) expresses refractive index. Then, laser light is turned into linearly polarized light by a polarizing beam splitter 7 and allowed to pass through a 1/4 wavelength plate 10 to be turned into the circularly polarized light, then irradiates the layer 3. |
