PRODUCTION OF ALKYL TERT-BUTYL ETHER

PURPOSE:To obtain the subject compound in high efficiency from a primary alcohol and a 4C hydrocarbon fraction containing isobutylene and butadiene using a cation exchange resin as a catalyst by specifying the reaction temperature, thereby suppressing side reactions. CONSTITUTION:A tert-butyl ether can be produced in high efficiency while suppressing the dimerization reaction of existing butadiene and the butenyl ether-forming reaction by contacting (A) a 4C hydrocarbon fraction containing isobutylene and butadiene, e.g. a 4C hydrocarbon fraction obtained by steam cracking and (B) a primary alcohol (preferably methanol) with (C) a cation exchange resin preferably having sulfonate group (more preferably a macroporous resin having sulfonate group) at 30-50 deg.C.
