A method and apparatus for cleaning filter elements (68) that are vertically positioned within a filter vessel (52) that has a tube sheet (66) dividing the filter vessel (52) into a lower filter compartment (62) and an upper plenum compartment (64). A fixed volume of backwash liquid is rapidly directed from the plenum compartment (64) above the tube sheet (66) through the filter elements (68) into the filter compartment (62) that has been drained of liquid.
