Device for preventing falls by means of which a load moving down a rope (2) can be slowed down and/or immobilised, which device comprises a body (3) possessing a pressure surface (8) and carrying a jamming element for jamming the rope against a pressure surface comprising guide means (9) for guiding the jamming element (13) relative to said body (3) that define a central positioning area (10) of the jamming element in which the rope is free to travel over the pressure surface, and two mutually opposite movement areas (11, 12) in each of which, as the jamming element moves away from the central area, it (the jamming element) moves towards the pressure surface so as to squeeze the rope against this surface. Retaining means (19) hold the jamming element (13) in its central area (10) and resist with a predetermined maximum force its movement away from this central area (10) towards either of its said mutually opposite movement areas (11, 12). <IMAGE>
