The rocker mechanism (17) has a base plate (11) fixed to the chair seat and a rocker body connected to it. It can be swivelled against a resetting spring (30,32) about a swivel axis. It can be latched by a locking mechanism, formed by a slider (35) displaceably mounted on the rocker body, with two diametrically opposed sockets for an operating lever (50). The lever moves between two end positions and, since it can be inserted in the displaceable slider from two different sides, the rocker body can be used for chairs which incline back or forward as required. In both cases the lever lies in a position beneath the seat which is easily accessible to the user.
