The insulator uses solid barrier elements (12..17) for matching the DC voltage field to the AC voltage field. The barrier elements are made of a compressed particulate material with a stepped increase in its electrical conductivity. The specific resistance of the particulate material is greater by between 2 and 10 times that of the transformer oil with the higher electrical conductivity. The dielectric constant is twice that of the transformer oil and is independent of the specific resistance. The barrier elements with the highest electrical resistance are positioned at the ends of the insulation path exhibiting equipotential surfaces with a small radius of curvature. The barrier elements may be made of impressed paper and all have the same thickness, with different spacings between them.
