<p>An internal combustion engine having cylinders (20), wherein each cylinder (20) comprises a split chamber with at least two regions (34, 36) formed therein and a piston (22) slidably disposed in the cylinder (20) to form at least one primary and secondary combustion chamber (50, 60) which are in communication with each other. Fuel delivery is accomplished by fuel injectors (52, 56) associated with the primary combustion chamber (50) and being operable to admit fuel into the primary combustion chamber (50) at preselected intervals and in predetermined amounts. The fuel admitted into the primary combustion chamber (50) is ignited to begin initial combustion as a first stage of combustion, after which, the ignited fuel mixture is forced into the secondary combustion chamber (60) for continual burning in a second stage of combustion.</p> |
