PROCESS FOR RECYCLING PLASTICS

The description relates to a process for recycling compact or porous plastics which consist entirely or partly of polyurethane plastics. The features of the process are that the plastics are prepared to form a reaction mixture with a low hydroxyl number which can be reprocessed in a usual manner into new final products. To this end, the plastics can either a) be swollen in suitable swelling agents and reduced to a fluid gel; or b) dissolved and/or decomposed in suitalbe hydroxy polymers; and c) the hydroxyl number is set to the desired value; d) where appropriate the reaction mixture from a) b) and c) is converted into a polyurethane prepolymer, e) the individual reaction mixtures a) to c) are further processed into a plyurethane product or into a plastic with the aid of other suitable hardener systems. The above process permits the admixture of selected additional dissolved or swollen plastics, paints, synthetic resins, elastomers, fibres, metal foils, pigments and other auxiliairies like flame protection agents and oxidation inhibitors.
