The data protection system uses a 4-bit control code for the 8-bit data blocks distributed between parallel memory modules. A control code generator supplies each of the control codes, a syndrome generator monitors the stored data and there is an error correction device for the data bit errors. Within each memory module all the inidividual bit errors are corrected and all the 2-bit errors are detected, a second 4-bit control code obtained from each initial 4-bit control code, to allow all combinations of bit errors to be recognised. Pref. a parity bit is incorporated in the control code to allow a parity bit check to be performed upon conversion of parity bit protected data into 4-bit control code protected data.
