To form holes or grooves in elastomeric and/or thermoplastic strips, especially for cladding rollers in papermaking to take up extracted water from the fibre pulp, heated punches are pressed into the material. The material is passed by a guide through the processing station, where a carrier fitted with punches extends across the material width and parallel to the material and structured to cover the material length either as a beam or a rotating roller. The free ends of the punches are heated, and drive systems bring the material guide and the heated punches into contact with each other. Where the material passes round a guide rollers, the punch carrier roller and the material surface move at the same speed and in the same direction. When using a punch beam, with at least one extending heated punch, the material and the beam are moved against each other vertically. The punches can be arranged so that the holes formed in the plastic material are at an angle from the material surface. After the holes have been formed, the material is cleaned by brushing to remove any debris from evaporated plastics material or parts of any clinging protective film. ADVANTAGE - Clean and trouble-free holes can be formed in the plastics material, at low cost and in a short time, with virtually no tool wear.
