The tool, for distributing mortar evenly over a course of brickwork, has two side walls (5) connected by an end wall (8) and a cross-member. An angle section (7) attached to the lower edge of each side wall fits over the edges of the brickwork and guides the tool. The tool has two longitudinal skids to support it on the brickwork. A ploughshare (9) attached to the tool spreads the mortar over the brickwork and an opening in the rear wall (8) with an attached blade of adjustable height controls the thickness of the layer of mortar.
