The stationary installation includes a laser range finder (1) and a pilot laser (2). The output beanms from the lasers, which are approximately parallel, are reflected in turn by two mirrors: a horizontally pivoting mirror (3) and a vertically pivoting mirror (4). On board the moving object, e.g. a ship, an optical receiver is installed consisting of four identical vertical plates arranged in a cross pattern. The plates carry matrices of diodes, the outputs of which are processed to produce position error signals.
