Microchips deposited in bulk in a hopper are discharged from the converging end of the hopper to fall onto a conveyor belt (1) below. The belt is perforated, with a line of holes matching the size of the microchips, so that they are retained in the holes in a position where a sensing finger (10) on a sensing arm (23) can be lowered to contact each chip as it passes. Also extending downwards from the arm is a locating finger (9) which enters a locating hole level with the chip holding hole. The belt travels round return rollers at each end, being advanced by a stepping motor and carried by a frame which can be tilted about a central transverse axis. This allows the belt to slope downwards under the hopper discharge outlet. The sensing arm is held down by a spring (11).
