A sliding piece 1 with a cam profile 2 bears against a ball 13 which is received in cells 15 in a body 16 which is movable in height with respect to an arm 4. The sliding piece 1 is actuated via a push-button 8. The block 16 has elastic studs 20, against which a rigid plate 17 connected to the backrest structure bears. Pressing the push-button 8 releases the body 16 joined to the backrest and enables it to be displaced in height. When the push-button is released, the device automatically locks the body 16 and, therefore, the backrest. The configuration and operation of the device are very simple. <IMAGE>
