In the prodn. of an electrolytic soln. for redox batteries, using V as one active material on both the cathode and anode, the novelty is that a redn. stage is carried out with a V cpd. (I) i.e. NH4VO3 or V2O5 in the presence of an inorganic acid (II) to dissolve (I).- Pref. conc. (II) and then (I) are added, pref. at least twice. Redn.is carried out in the presence of a reducing agent, pref. H2SO4, N2H4.2HCl, H2O2 or H2, or by electrolysis. (I) is reduced to V (III) or V (II) by electrolytic redn. and then (I) is added and reduced again to produce V (VI). In partic. V (III) is produced at the anode and V (V) at the cathode, then the V (V) is reduced to V (IV) with a reducing agent. The V is converted to a discharged tetravalent and trivalent pair, i.e. V(IV)/V(III), and a charged pentavalent and divalent pair i.e. V(V)/V(II)
