A filter device for pref. biological purificn. of gases has a loose filter material filling (13) incorporating one or pref. several support bodies or inserts (19), pref. arranged randomly and joined together to form modules. USE/ADVANTAGE - The filter device is used e.g. to treat solvent-laden air using microorganisms pref. in compost used as filter material. Settling of the filter material is prevented so that filtering capacity is maintained constant over the filter material service life.
