Substituted sulfonylureas of the formula I <IMAGE> I where R1 is hydrogen, C1-C4-alkyl, C3-C4-alkenyl or alkynyl, C1-C4-haloalkyl, C3-C6-alkoxyalkyl, C4-C6-haloalkoxyalkyl or C5-C6-cycloalkyl, R2 is hydrogen, methyl or ethyl, R3 is hydrogen, halogen, methyl or methoxy, R4 is hydrogen, methyl or methoxy, X is N or C-H, and Hal is fluorine, chlorine or bromine, and alkali metal or alkaline earth metal salts thereof, with the proviso that R1 is not methyl when Hal is chlorine and X is N, a process for the manufacture of sulfonylureas of the formula I and their use as herbicides.
