Oxidation resistant solid soln - of niobium and sintered-on silicides forming silica in oxidising atmos

Oxidn.-resistant high-melting solid soln. consisting of prefabricated Nb moulded materials with sintered-on silicide casing, opt. contg. refractory carbide or oxide (esp. finely-divided) additives and automatically forming SiO2 protective layers on use in an oxidising atmos., are suitable as protective layer combination on high temp. Fe metal gp. alloys, and also on Mo. Solid soln. may consists of sheet- Nb and MoSi2 protective layers, or of Mo or Mo alloys and an MoSi2 protective layer with an intermediate Nb separating layer. Nb may be replaced by Nb alloys; MoSi2 may be replaced, partly or entirely, by WSi2; and silicides may be partly replaced by germanides.
