High gloss "mirror" surface protective layers are applied to wax pastes, esp. shoe-creams and floor-polishes, to prevent drying and shrinking on storage and maintain good appearance, by (1) filling and solidifying the pastes in tins (containers) and (2) spraying the surfaces with very thin lacquer-films formed from (a) alcohol-soluble resins inert to and insoluble in benzines and aromatics and (b) lacquer auxiliaries. (a) is eg. an alkali-condensed urea resin with >1 mole HCHO/mole urea. Lacquer auxiliaries for improving adhesion, wetting and flow pref. consist of cpds. (-Si(CH3)2-O)m-(CH2-CH2-O-CH2-CH(CH3)-O)n-R (where m = 90%, n = 10%, R is H, alkyl or acyl), opt. mixed with high mol. wt. unsatd. fatty acids, e.g. ricinoleic- or linolenic acid, polymerised to 30%.
|
