The method detects constituents of hard water by use of a chemical reagent. The hard water constituent, i.e. Ca+2, Mg+2, included in sea water used as cooling water in a high pressure boil, causes scale or sludge in the boiler pipes. This method prevents a large-scale boiler accident from occuring by simply detecting the sea water pollution within the boiler. The chemical reagent (100 W%) below 64.6 deg.C is composed of methyl alcohol (48.5 W%), tri ethanol amine (50 W%), sodium cyanide (1.2-1.3 W%) and rio chrome black (0.2-0.3 W%). The constituent is detected as colour by mixing the chemical reagent and the test water by the ratio of 3:1,000.
