PURPOSE:To industrially and safely produce a carboxylic acid under a mild reactional condition at a low cost by a novel reaction by using an aldehyde compound as a raw material in the coexistence of a nickel compound and oxygen gas. CONSTITUTION:An aldehyde compound of formula I (R<1> is alkyl, aryl) (e.g. octyl aldehyde) is reacted with an oxygen-containing gas in the presence of a nickel compound of formula II (R<2>, R<4>, R<5>, R<7> are alkyl, aryl, etc.; R<3>, R<6> are H, halogen, alkyl, etc.,) (e.g. a compound of formula III) to obtain a carboxylic acid of formula IV (e.g. octanoic acid). The nickel compound of formula II can be obtained by a desalting method using a diketene corresponding to a desired nickel compound and NiSO4, NiCl2, etc. The method does not use strongly toxic reagents, explosive reagents and further expensive reagents. The amount of the Ni compound used may be reduced. |
