IC engine crankshaft angular position measurement system

On a portion (4) of the crankcase (3) which extends parallel to the flywheel (2), a magnetic sensor (5) is fitted into a hole (12) with its head (14) protruding towards the inner face of the flywheel (2) from which cylindrical pins (6) project parallel to the axis of the crankshaft (1). As each pin (6) passes close to the sensor (5), it generates an electrical pulse for an ignition control unit. The longitudinal axis of the sensor (5) is also parallel to the crankshaft (1). Pref. the hole (12) is drilled in a flange (13) extending from the crankcase, this being the only necessary modification to the engine.
