1381964 Polymerization SNAM PROGETTI SpA 11 May 1972 [13 May 1971] 22238/72 Heading C3P Unsaturated compounds having at least one carbon to carbon multiple bond are polymerized by contacting with a polymerization initiator formed by passing an electric current through a substantially water-free liquid medium constituted by a halohydrocarbon and an ionizable auxiliary electrolyte. The unsaturated compound may be ethylene, propylene or 2-methylbutene. The halohydrocarbon may be ethylene dichloride, methyl chloride, methylene dichloride, chloroform, carbon tetrachloride, 1,1,2- trichloroethane, propyl bromide or butyl iodide. The auxiliary electrolyte may be a quaternary ammonium salt. The catalyst may be preformed, e.g. in a separate reaction vessel, or may be formed in situ. In examples, ethylene is polymerized in the presence of a catalyst formed by electrolysing tetrabutylammonium chloride in ethylenedichloride. |
