PURPOSE:To suppress subsidiary production of carbon dioxide and obtain a carbonate in high yield and in high selectivity by reacting an alcohol with carbon monoxide and oxygen in the presence of a catalyst consisting of copper(I) iodide and a specific nitrogen compound. CONSTITUTION:An alcohol is reacted with carbon monoxide and oxygen in the presence of a catalyst consisting of (A) copper(I) iodide and (B) at least one kind of nitrogen compound selected from 1,10-phenanthroline, alpha,alpha'-dipyridyl and imidazole, preferably in 5-50kg/cm<2> carbon monoxide partial pressure and 0.5-10kg/cm<2> oxygen partial pressure at 100-200 deg.C to provide a carbonate. The catalyst is preferably used at an amount of the component A of 0.5-100mmol based on 1mol alcohol and at an amount of the component B of 0.5-2mol based on 1mol of the component A. According to the above-mentioned method, a low-grade alcohol containing water can directly be used as a raw material, because the activity of the above-mentioned catalyst is stable to water. |
