PURPOSE:To obtain a lightweight and inexpensive catalyst and catalyst carrier by molding a mixture prepared by adding one of or both of glass and clay to mica or coating a base material with said mixture and drying the molded one or the coated base material before baking same at the dehydration temp. of mica or higher. CONSTITUTION:One of or both of glass and clay is added to mica and water is added to and mixed with the resulting composition to obtain paste. This paste is molded into a predetermined shape, for example, a plate shape or a honeycomb shape or applied to a predetermined base material to be dried. Next, the molded one or the coated base material is baked at the dehydration temp. of mica or higher and the softening temp. of glass or higher or the sintering temp. of clay or higher to obtain a catalyst carrier. Subsequently, water or alcohol is added to a catalyst component containing one or more kind of a component among titanium oxide, molybdenum oxide to prepare a slurry which is, in turn, infiltrated or applied to the previously obtained catalyst carrier and baked to obtain a catalyst body. By this method, wt. reduction and cost reduction can be achieved without lowering catalytic activity. |
