Operating an installation for winding a material from an extruder, onto a spool, includes using a winding station with an electric motor for driving the winding unit, and a control unit. The electric motor rotational movement is a function of the current. The material flow rate is detected and fed to the calculation unit, where a signal is generated which controls the motor speed. The calculation unit enables the acute radius of the coil to be determined. ADVANTAGE - The process is simple and does not require the tensile force of the plastic material to be measured.
